Quick Write

Wow!  Today is busy.  Busier than usual.   Work.  Kids.  Meals.  House.  E-mails.  Friends.  Today seems crazy.  And I still have more to do.  But I still want to write.  I still have something to say.  So how quickly can I say it?   What are the main ideas?  What is the point?  And how fast and efficiently can I get to it?
Okay.   First, stop.  Breathe.  Stop.  Breathe.
Every day, every single day, I need to do something that aligns with Purpose.  Maybe that something is to rest, but most days it is to do something that moves me forward because I have found that I feel the most rested when I am the most productive.
Keep Purpose in the forefront.  It seems to come around anyway.  For me, it usually comes around 1:00, after I’m done with the morning shift.  I start getting that uneasy feeling that there is something or Someone is patiently waiting for me.  Almost everything else feels like a bit of chore.  I don’t mind fulfilling my obligations, but I need to start writing.  I just want to get to my keyboard.  I have little patience for traffic lights or the person ahead of me at the express lane who has 57 items and needs to pay with a third-party check from the Bank of Manila.
Stay present until you can get to Purpose.  One of the tricks of the Enemy is to cause us to miss the present moment.  If I go into Purpose feeling frustrated and irritable, it’s going to distract me while I’m trying to write or paint or plant my garden or study or be with my kids or work on my business.  So breathe.  The Purpose of Purpose is not Purpose.  The Purpose of Purpose is love.  Love and stress cannot coexist.
Practice gratitude.  There are few faiths or philosophies, large or small, that don’t espouse the virtues of gratitude.  There’s a reason for this.  Gratitude brings me to the present.  And when I am present, I am peaceful.  When I am peaceful, I am more easily able to align with Purpose.  There are so many things to be grateful for, large and small.  Sometimes it’s fun to be aware of and grateful for the small things like streetlights or shoelaces or fingernail clippers or a cold soda.
After being sick for more than a week, I’m grateful that I can breathe without coughing.  I’m grateful that my stomach feels good.  I’m grateful that I can walk and see and that my heart beats regularly.  I’m grateful that people love me because I’m not that easy to love.  I’m also grateful that the people I love get more beautiful every day.  I’m grateful for my job. I’m grateful that gratitude enables to focus on what’s good in life.  The truth is there is a lot of good in life.  A lot.
There it is.  Do something every day.  Keep Purpose in front.  Stay present.  Be grateful.  Get to Purpose as quickly as possible but don’t forget to love before, during and after your work.
There’s more.  There is a lot more, but today is busier than usual.  But it’s not so busy that I don’t have time to tell you to Get Started and Keep Going!

Wow! Hoy en día está ocupado. Más ocupado que de costumbre. Trabajar. Kids. Comidas. House. Los e-mails. Friends. Hoy en día parece una locura. Y todavía tengo mucho por hacer. Pero todavía quiero escribir. Todavía tengo algo que decir. Así lo rápido que puedo decir? ¿Cuáles son las ideas principales? ¿Cuál es el punto? Y lo rápido y eficiente puedo llegar a ella?
Bien. En primer lugar, para. Breathe. Parar. Breathe.
Sólo quiero llegar a mi teclado.

The Perils of the Past

"When circumstances force you to  some sort of distress, quickly return to yourself.  Do not stay out of rhythm longer than you must:  you will master the harmony the more by constantly going back to it."
Marcus Aurelius

What is the past?  It’s that period of time that is completely over.  It is the period of time I cannot change or alter.  It cannot be undone or redone.  I wonder how much time I’ve actually spent reliving or regretting the past.  Too much.  I can’t undo that either.  All I can really do is move forward now.
Does this sound cliché?  It’s not.  How much time do we spend in the past?  For many of us, it’s a lot.  And it’s sneaky.   There are two times in the past where we go.  One is the distant past, sometimes called “the good old days,”  “the golden age,” or as Bruce Springsteen says, “Glory Days.”  For some it’s high school or college.  Maybe it’s a period of childhood.  In my own life, it was the 10th grade in Marina, California.  That was a great time in my life.  I got good grades, had a lot of fun, and I had a lot of close friends.  It was, in some ways, the best time of my life.  But it also did a lot of damage, because when it ended I didn’t know how to let it go.  I held onto it for years.  Years.  At some levels I stopped growing emotionally.  It took me a long time before I even realized that I was doing this.  Certain songs would play and I would practically be in a trance as I transported myself back to that time.
When I could, I’d revisit Marina, but of course it was never the same.  I tried recreating events and relationships that had been, but obviously that wasn’t possible.  While I was gone, the close familiar relationships of the people who had remained had changed or ended and new ones had formed.  And the perspective I had about that time in my life was only my perspective.  It wasn’t anyone else’s.
The reason we can’t go home again is because that home left when you did..  You have to settle in your new home.
That was something I didn’t do.  It took me years to settle in the new place, San Diego.   And while I was doing that I was also letting a lot of good times pass me by.  I didn’t realize how wonderful and interesting and great all the people around me were.  In fact, it wasn’t until my 20th reunion that I realized how fun my last two years of high school actually were.   It was a very healing revelation.
But I let the past cause me to miss a lot of my present.  And as I missed the present, I was also missing Purpose.   I was fortunate to have Purpose find me even in those days, but I still missed a lot of the present and when I miss the present, I miss happiness.
The other past that we get stuck in is the recent past.  Last week, last night, 15 minutes ago.  These aren’t the good old days we want to keep, these are the moments we wish we could change.
“I wish I hadn’t had so much to drink.”
“I wish I hadn’t said that.
“I wish I had done a better job.”
“I wish I had seen that police officer.”
“I wish I hadn’t overslept.”
Here’s where Purpose can rescue us.  The moment, the very moment I realize I am trapped in regret is the same moment I can renew my Purpose.  I can write my blog.  I can pick up the paintbrush.  I can study something in my field.  I can smile at my children.  I can be kinder.
Purpose, like the present, is there every single moment.  It waits for our attention.  It doesn’t berate us for the moments lost.  It just says, “Oh!  I’m so glad you’re here now!  Now.  In this moment.”
There is almost no way to be in Purpose and not be in the present.  This moment, as I am writing is so sweet and so wonderful, and it’s just where I want to be.   Soon I will have to stop this activity, but I never have to stop being in Purpose or being in the present.  This is the gift that wants to keep on giving.
Yes, the past, with its good times and its hard lessons can be a gift, too.  But eventually I have to put that away and the sooner, the better.  But the present, Purpose, is, is (present tense) like God, and is with me always.

Me pregunto cuánto tiempo he pasado realmente revivir o lamentando el pasado. Demasiado.
"Ojalá no hubiera dormido."
Puedo sonreír a mis hijos.

How Many Different Kinds of Brunettes Are There?

Well, here it is, another day.  Another battle.  Another fight where the Enemy whispers in my ear, “You really should stop.  You’re done.  You really don’t have anything new to offer.  How many ways can you say this?”
And, of course, I think, “What if today is the day that the Enemy is right?  What if I’ve run out of things to say?  What if I’m done?”
Interestingly, I go through this battle on Facebook, too.  I joined Facebook three years ago, almost accidentally, because I wanted to read an article and one thing lead to another and suddenly I was on Facebook.  At first I used Facebook the way most people do, to find old friends.  But I didn’t do the usual status updates, such as, “Going shopping.  I need toilet paper.”
Facebook quickly became a vehicle for me to encourage others and to be positive.  Ideas or maxims like these would come to me:
“This world is not my home, but it is my school...and my playground.”
“Problems are not optional, but suffering is. When I truly live this, then problems are also optional.”
“Troubles are not okay...but they will be.”
“The opposite of fear is not courage but determination.”

“The best answer to "Good morning," is ‘Yes, it is.’”

“Time isn't always on my side, but eternity is.”

And my favorite:

“Don’t wait for opportunity.  Prepare for it.”

These thoughts would often come to me from seemingly out of nowhere.  Sometimes, I’d be in the shower.  One time, one came in a dream.  I wrote hundreds of them.  And unless I attributed one to someone else, they were all mine.  I sometimes dabbled in humor and, usually to my regret, political commentary.  But for the most part, I stuck with words of encouragement.
My comments seemed to be popular, as far as Facebook standards go, considering I’m not yet a known author.   Best of all, they seemed to encourage others.  I know they encouraged me.
But here was the interesting thing.  Every couple of days, if I hadn’t posted a new comment, I would get this feeling that it was all over and that I’d posted my last comment.  I would hear this voice whisper, “You really should stop.  You’re done.  You really don’t have anything new to offer.  How many ways can you say it?”
This always scared me.  I really thought I had nothing new to say.  Then a little while later or the next day, something new would come and it was an amazing experience.  I don’t want to belittle the actual birthing experience, but every time I wrote something new, it felt like I was creating new life.  I get this same feeling every time I write a new blog or do a new radio show.
Perhaps you’re asking as I have, “How many ways are there to tell people to Get Started and to Keep Going?”   My only reply is, “How many different kinds of brunettes are there?”
Why do I write so often?  There are at least three reasons:
1.     I have to.  There is a source greater than me, that wants to express Power and Purpose through me.  This power and purpose cannot be expressed in quite the same way through any other means.  Yes, there are other ways, perhaps even better ways, but not quite the same way.
2.     I need to hear the message to Get Started and to Keep Going.   I need to hear it every day, just like I need to eat every day.  Yes, I can go without eating for a few days, as I did last week when I was sick.  But that doesn’t mean I should or that it was good for me.
3.     You need to hear the message to Get Started and to Keep Going.  You also need to hear it every single day.  As I’ve said, the Purpose behind Purpose is love and this is my act of love to the world.

In fact, like Steven Pressfield, I offer a prayer before I write any blogs.  It goes like this:
            Dear God,
Please guide my heart, my head and my hands today.  (I might add a special emphasis to one of those depending on my need.)  Make me a blessing to You, to my family, to the world and to myself.
            Amen.

So there it is.  I wrote again today.  I thought for sure I had nothing left.  Then my fingers hit the keyboard and the words started coming.  They’ll probably come tomorrow and the next day too, until God is no longer able to make a different kind of brunette.

Bueno, aquí está, un día más. Otra batalla.

Amen.

Así que ahí está. Volví a escribir hoy.

What Are You Choosing?

“Life is so brief
And time is a thief,
When you’re undecided.
Like a fistful of sand,
It can slip right through your hand.”

Rod Stewart – Young Turks, 1983

This morning I woke up and I wasn’t happy.  And I should have been.  I got up early.  I felt better than I have for a week.  I could anticipate returning to work.  But today I woke up and the moment I did, the dogs were in my face, jumping up and down needing to be taken out.  By the time the dogs got out and the coffee was made, I’ve lost about 30 minutes and I felt frustrated.  Now it’s 5:30 instead of 5:00, and I felt frustrated and resentful.  I’d lost a half an hour!
And then I saw it.   It was another trick of the enemy.  Another lie.  I didn’t lose a half-hour.  I gained it!  Yes, I would have liked to have started reading earlier, but it was less than three months ago, that I was getting up at 6:30!  I wasn’t reading at all in the morning.  I was jumping out of bed and doing the dozen or so things that needed to be done before I could leave for work.
Now I start my mornings with reading and prayer and a little study.  Would I like it to start sooner?  Of course.  But the fact that I’m starting at all is amazing.  I have always told myself I am not a morning person.  Therefore I was not a morning person.  Yet, here I am getting up usually 30 – 60 minutes before everyone else in the house.
I have always told myself that I am not organized.  Yet, the other day a dear friend said, “I don’t believe you’re disorganized.  You just have too much to do.”  What a different way to see myself and my life.  I thought about that for hours, because all the evidence seems to say I’m disorganized.  But what if I’m creating that evidence so that I have this wonderful valid reason for not reaching my full potential?   Maybe by lack of organization is my cute gimmick that keeps me from reaching Purpose.  Does it serve me to be or to see myself as disorganized or clumsy or perpetually late or easily distracted?
I’m in a war here.  So are you.
Why would any of those lies serve us?  They may have served us in the past because they kept us from reaching our full potential.  They kept us back.  They kept us down with the 95% of the population (according to Earl Nightingale in The Strangest Secret) who will not reach their full potential.  But why can’t we be focused or self-disciplined or organized or calmer or kinder?   Why can’t our bodies look better?  Why can’t we take better care of ourselves?
I’m not asking to teach physics, or play for the NFL.  I’m asking to do things that are within my power right now.  I’m not asking to exert a great amount of extra effort, only a consistent amount of regular effort.
It’s interesting, but the people I spend the most time with are the people I want to be like.  My closest friends are calm, organized and wise.  They are also people persons and they are leaders.  Every one of my close friends is someone I want to be like.  None of my friends lack ambition.  None of my friends is lazy.  Each of my friends is competent and, in some cases, the very best at what he or she does.  Yes, each of my friends has weaknesses, but they have a far greater number of strengths.
And I am their friend, too.  This means I have at least one quality, most likely several qualities that they find attractive and want to emulate.  This means I contribute more than my own to the relationship.
So can I add to my list of strengths?  Can I be organized?  Who says I can’t be?  Apparently, me.  I say I can’t be organized or calm or focused.   Maybe I need to send and receive kinder and more accurate messages.
In The Success Principles, Jack Canfield says the first 99% is difficult and the rest is easy.   I think what’s difficult is being consistent.  It takes time and self-discipline.  But it’s not impossible.  I don’t think a grand one-time decision to change is as necessary (or as helpful) as dozens if not hundreds of small daily decisions.   It doesn’t even take that much time.  It just takes a better use of the time I’ve already been given.
This morning I woke up and I wasn’t happy.  But I’m happy now.   I’ve chosen to be.  I’ve also chosen to be calm, organized and focused.  What are you choosing to be?

La vida es tan breve
Y el tiempo es un ladrón,
Cuando usted está indeciso.
Al igual que un puñado de arena,
Puede deslizarse a través de tu mano. "

Rod Stewart - Young Turks, 1983

Esta mañana me desperté y no era feliz. Y yo debería haber sido. Me levanté temprano.
Otra mentira. No perdí una media hora. Me ganó!
Siempre me he dicho que no estoy organizado. "¡Qué manera diferente a verme a mí mismo y mi vida.
He elegido ser.

Today Is Not the Day

“I got this feeling, that today’s the day.”
Today’s the Day – the singing group, America, 1976
Today is not the day.
Today is not the day that this gets easier.
Today is not the day to let my guard down.
Today is not the day to relax my standards.
Today is not the day that the Enemy stops whispering any or all of the following into my ear:
                        “You need a day off.”
“You’re going to burn out if you don’t stop.”
“ You have nothing left to say.”
                        “This isn’t going anywhere.”
“You don’t have the stamina to be consistent or persistent.”
“You have so much to do.”
                        “The house is a mess.”
                        “Your car is a mess.”
                        “Your life is a mess.”

(All of the above are probably true, but what does any of that have to do with my Purpose?)
The Bible says, “Today is the day of salvation.”  Not tomorrow.  Not next week.  A trick of the Enemy is to convince us to “get my life in order” before I trust God with it or before I begin working in Purpose.  Although this may be cliché, the urgent always seems to outweigh the important.  The urgent is what is in my face and usually constantly.  The important is what is on my heart, always.
What is on my heart is the need to let you know that you have Purpose, too, and that your calling is supremely important and that the Enemy will fight just as hard against you as it does everyone else who is trying to move forward.
What is on my heart is to sit down and let my fingers touch the keyboards and let the words come.
What is on my heart is to make some sort of positive difference in the world.
What is on my heart is to quit wasting time and to quit wasting my life.
What is on my heart is to be calm, present, and joyful and I can’t be any of those things if I’m not working in Purpose.
What is on my heart is to live better and love better, two things I’m spectacularly bad at doing.
What is on my heart is to write.
            What’s on your heart?
            You know, don’t you?
            So…
Today is not the day to quit.
Today is the day to do one thing, just one thing, toward Purpose.
Today is the day to write, to paint, to sing, to dance, to study, to exercise, to work with the children, to start the ministry, to try out for the team, to get the training, to mend or end the relationship.
Today is the day, not to get on with your life, but with your Purpose.  Once you begin Purpose your life will start to take care of itself.  Today.  Not tomorrow.  There is no tomorrow.  There never has been and there never will be.  Today is it and today is all you get.
Today is not the day to put off.
I hope I’ve been clear.  I’ll be honest.  All of this has been true for me.  It hasn’t gotten any easier to do this yet, somehow, once I get started, it seems to be the easiest thing in the world.  There’s very little else I’d rather be doing than the thing I’m supposed to be doing.  I hope my children and my students and my friends and my readers catch this.  “Catch,” as with a virus, and “catch” as in “understand.”   Can we put down the remote?  Can we stop being entertained?  Can we each do the thing we’re supposed to be doing?
The world is in trouble, not just because of the presence of evil, but because of the absence of good.  Am I being too hard, too demanding?   Am I projecting my own fears?   Maybe.  All I know is the little I’ve contributed in my life seems to have helped a few people along the way and I think I’m supposed to help more.
So today is not the day to quit.  And if there were such a thing as tomorrow, that won’t be the day to quit either.
Today is the day to start.

No mañana. No próxima semana.
Hoy. No mañana.

Purpose and Passion

I want to talk more about this “off” feeling, because it came back when I woke up this morning.    I didn’t feel like being with anyone or doing anything.    Have you ever had a day like that?  You look at your spouse, your kids, your job, your Purpose, and you say, “I just don’t want to do this….”
How do you complete that sentence?
            I just don’t want to do this…
                        - Any more?
                        - Today?
A lot depends on where that feeling comes from.  Feelings are funny things.  They should not always be fully trusted, nor should they always be ignored.  In some cases, such as with a job or a calling, I might just be getting tired or scared.  There’s a lot of uncertainty in pursuing one’s dreams.  There are no guarantees.  It is said that the fear of success is greater than the fear of failure, because most of us can identify with failure.   We’ve all failed somewhere in life and I know if I fail, if I give up, then I can come up with a great story as to why I did so and people will commiserate with me.
I can hear it all now:
“Hey, at least you tried.  That’s better than a lot of people who don’t even do that.”
“You just bit off more than you can chew.  Don’t worry.  Everyone does it.”
            “Focus on other things.”
I know those all sound nice and are well-meant, but… no.
If I’m called to do something, I’m called to do it until I’m not.  Now I don’t have all the answers and I don’t always know when one calling ends and another begins.  I don’t know if it’s possible to have more than one Purpose at the same time, or if there’s only one but it involves different ways of expression.  I don’t know if we get one Purpose all our lives or several throughout our lives.  I don’t know if Purposes can overlap.  I don’t even know if we get put on the sidelines for a while.
I remember a very confusing period of my life.  I was running Junior High youth group at my church.  I was good at it.  I loved the kids and they loved me.  There were struggles, but it was one of the best experiences of my life.  Then it started slipping away.  I still loved it and I loved the kids, but I got taken out by church politics and by territorialism.  And also, by the very sad feeling that I was losing my passion for it.
Now there were other things going on in my life, too and much of it was traumatic. Within a year, my entire life had turned upside down and I lost my home, my job, my ministry, my church, my music collection and even my comic books.  Each of those losses is a story unto itself.  But the bottom line is that I had to start at the bottom again.  And I wasn’t sure why because I had already proven myself and my abilities.
Robert Bly mentions in Iron John, the prince who winds up in the dungeon and has to start over again.  In the book of Genesis, Joseph is a slave and then a prisoner for years before he realizes his God-given dream of ruling a nation.  Is following my Purpose going to allow me to rule a nation?   Probably not, but I will be able to rule over myself, and that’s far more powerful and important.
This blog did not go where I expected it to go.  I did not plan on revealing so much of my past.
What I was originally going to say was, that no matter what your feelings, do the thing you’re supposed to do until you’re absolutely sure you aren’t supposed to do it any longer.   Don’t let apathy or fear or procrastination keep you from Purpose.  Love your Purpose.  And remember that love, as I use the word here is not emotion or passion.  It’s an intellectual assent, a commitment, to see it through until you’re sure you aren’t supposed to any more.
When I was working with the Junior High group I had a huge passion for it.  And passion can be good, but it can also be a trick of the Enemy. Passion, like any other emotion, can wax and wane.  Passion can fade.  At some point in my ministry my passion faded.  Had I had more wisdom and life experience, I would have not panicked when my passion ebbed somewhat.  It probably would have come back.  It’s pointless to wonder now.
What I do know is that I have something different now.  What I have is beyond passion.  It’s a commitment to follow through, as often as I can, to remind you to Get Started and Keep Going.  Don’t worry about passion.  Purpose is not my life.  It is not even me.  It is simply the way my gifts are being utilized.  But when I am in it, I am more “me” than at any other time.  Purpose keeps me present and authentic.  It keeps me grounded and it keeps me joyful.  And it gives me the ability to love again when “I just don’t feel like it.”

- ¿Hoy?

Ama a tu propósito.
Finalidad me mantiene presente y auténtico.
