I've Been Feeling a Little Down Today

"And when I run I feel His pleasure."  Eric Liddell ~ Chariots of Fire

I’ve been feeling a little down today.  I’ve been feeling fear and sadness.  The reasons don’t matter, because my problems are mine, but those feelings are something we all share.  Feelings are one of the Enemy’s most effective tools.  I often feel things I’d rather not feel.  I feel sad.  I feel depressed.  I feel hopeless.  I feel enraged.  I feel needy.  Most of all, I feel afraid.
I’m afraid that I have nothing new to say.
I’m afraid that I am in over my head.
I’m afraid that my goals are ridiculous.
I’m afraid that I will not get the approval I’m hoping for either personally or professionally.
I’m afraid that the only reason I’m doing this is for approval.
            I’m afraid of failure.
            I’m afraid of success.
I’m afraid of dying unwanted and unloved.

As I was in the very act of writing this, at 10:30 at night, my middle daughter came in crying because she had had a nightmare.  I avoided telling her that they were just dreams, that nightmares aren’t real, because her fears are just as real to her as mine are to me.  I asked her what she wanted, if she wanted me to lie down with her or if she wanted to go sleep in our bed with her mommy.  She said, “I don’t’ want to have the nightmares anymore.”  I thought that was a brilliant response.
I don’t want to be afraid anymore either.  Unfortunately, life being what it is, I probably will be.
But here’s the thing:  those fears, like my daughter’s nightmares aren’t real.  Oh, they feel real.  They feel horrible.  And they can keep me in their grip for fifteen minutes (the average lifespan of a dream, I’m told) or for a lifetime.  It’s taken me years to even begin approaching some of my goals.
After being an elementary school teacher for nine years and being extremely unhappy in it, I came alive when I finally took a friend’s advice and began moving towards teaching adults.  The very act of moving toward this goal freed something in me.  The process of changing jobs took a few months, but I remember how happy I felt just talking to the Human Resource lady as I was filling out the necessary paperwork.  I stayed on in the elementary school district as a substitute teacher, but I never subbed, not even once.  I never needed to. Within a couple of weeks of starting I was offered several opportunities inside and outside of the adult education system.
I believe this is what happened:  because I was in my purpose, I felt alive and free and happy.  People in this state tend to be positive.  Positive people are attractive people, both physically and emotionally.  Attractive people are generally offered more opportunities.
This doesn’t mean that there weren’t problems and challenges, but nothing seemed impossible and everything felt like an opportunity for growth.  The thing I kept saying in those first weeks in my new life was, “It’s a whole new world out here!”
The feelings I’m having at this moment are similar to the feelings I have every time I sit down and write.  I feel peaceful.  I feel clear.  I feel strong and capable.  My fear has vanished.
“Resist the Devil and he will flee,” according to St. Paul.   That is what happened as I began writing.  This is what happens when you start painting or dancing or starting your business.  The Enemy runs.
Oh, he’ll be back tomorrow and we will have to fight again.  I’m pretty sure there won’t be many days when we won’t fight this battle.  The battle for spiritual and creative freedom goes on indefinitely and on many levels.  The wars for our souls occurs every day.  The best battle stance to take is the one that allows me to do my work, which for me is usually sitting down in front of a computer or a notebook.
For today, however, I’ve done what I’m supposed to do.  My reward?  Knowing that I’ve done what I’m supposed to do.  Knowing that, in doing what I’m supposed to do, I make the world a better place, even if I never find out how that occurs.  Tonight I can sleep peacefully.  I did what I was supposed to do today.

"Y cuando corro siento Su placer." Eric Liddell ~ Carros de fuego

Me he estado sintiendo un poco mal hoy. Me he estado sintiendo miedo y tristeza. Me siento triste. Me siento deprimido. Me siento desesperada. Me siento furioso.

Nunca me necesitaba.
Me siento claro. Me siento fuerte y capaz.

I Forgot

What a day.  Things did not go well.  I did not reach a lot of my goals today.  Ironically, I wrote out my daily and weekly goals this morning and I was very excited.  But then I forgot.  I forgot to keep them in front of me.  I forgot how important they are.  I forgot how important I am.  When I’m not important to myself, I’m not important to others and I allow them to decide what will happen to me.
Maybe I thought that just writing my goals down was enough.  Maybe I thought I had done enough this week and I needed a break.  Maybe I’m putting myself under too much pressure.  I never promised anyone I would write every day.  Maybe I’m just too hard on myself and I should cut myself some slack.
            Or maybe I shouldn’t.
I’m tired, but I’m not to the point of burnout.  Can I go just a little longer?  Can I write just a little more?  Can I do just one more thing?  How important is all of this to me anyway?  And why am I doing this?
I think I have an answer to both questions with a story from my past.
When I was going to UCSD in the 80’s, I had a term paper due on the night of the final test, so I worked on it until 2:00 a.m.  I slept for four hours and then began working again.  At the time, I had an electric typewriter that was at least 11 years old.  I began working and what happened?   The ribbon broke.  Now, for those too young to remember the typewriter, the ribbon contained the ink so the words could be seen on the paper.  And it broke.  At about 6 in the morning.
I don’t remember the whole sequence of events, but I know that after panicking I tried to borrow two other people’s typewriters and neither one worked.  So I located a store that sold the ribbon I needed.  I didn’t have a car at the time, I had a little scooter, about the size and speed of a Mo-Ped.  So everything took longer.  But I replaced the ribbon and got back to work.  By now it was almost noon.  I had to work for three hours that day so I called my boss to see if I could get the day off.  He said, “No.”  So I dutifully scootered to my job, an after-school recreation program about 10 miles away.  I put in my three hours and returned home to finish the paper.  I got it done and then scootered the 20 something miles to UCSD.
Somehow I got there, late, but there nonetheless.  I turned in my paper, finished my final and at the end of it all, a girl was kind enough to take me and my scooter home in her minivan.  On the way, she told me of a place closer to my home where I could drive to and which would cut my drive time in half.  So it all turned out well.  In fact, if the ribbon hadn’t broken I probably would have never found out about the shortcut to school.
What I remember though in all of that was that I was asking the same questions I just asked above: Can I go just a little longer?  Can I write just a little more?  Can I do just one more thing?  How important is all of this to me anyway?  And why am I doing this?
It’s funny how often those questions come up in life, isn’t it?  It turned out that I could go just a little longer.  I could write just a little more.  I could do just one more thing.  It was vitally important to me.  I was doing it because I felt I had no choice.  To not do it would be to accept a failing grade, but worse it would mean I hadn’t really tried my very best.  To not do it would have meant I was giving up.
I find that today the answers are also the same.  I can go just a little longer.  I can write just a little more.  I can do just one more thing.  It is vitally important to me.  I am doing it because I feel I have no choice. Living out my purpose is of vital importance to me.  “Vital” as in life sustaining or life-giving
Today I almost forgot all of that.  I almost forgot that if I want to truly have a life that sustains me, I have to be in my purpose.
It’s interesting how purpose is tied in with self-esteem.  Had I remembered and followed my purpose today, I wouldn’t have spent as much time as I did waiting for or waiting on others.  I do both of those things a lot.  But when I’m in my purpose I seem to have a lot more self-respect.  I know where the boundary lines are.
So today, I wrote.  Tomorrow, I will write again.  Or I won’t.  But if I don’t, it won’t be because I’ve forgotten.

Tal vez me estoy poniendo bajo demasiada presión.
O tal vez no.
Comencé a trabajar y qué pasó?
Él dijo, "No."

I've Fallen in Love With Someone Else

Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there

Madonna - Like a Prayer

I have fallen in love with someone else.  If that shocks or offends you, I’m sorry, but it’s true.  I’m in love with my Muse.  I’m not talking about one of the nine Greek Muses or one of the three Roman Muses; I’m talking about the one that sits on my shoulder and tells me what to write, how to teach, what to say to an audience or how to help a client.  Sometimes she tells me the exact words to say at just the right moment.  She has even helped me in the kitchen.  I love her because she has given me the means to make my life meaningful in ways both large and small.
She’s pretty amazing really.  So far, I don’t think she has ever been wrong.  That doesn’t mean everyone likes what she says to me, but I have learned if I’m more concerned about pleasing her, then I don’t really have to worry about pleasing others.
Now it’s a complex relationship.  She can be a bit demanding.  She can’t be taken for granted and she can’t be ignored.  Well, she can, but I have done so only and always at my own peril.
On the plus side, I often get credit for her creations. People say I’m gifted and naturally intelligent, creative, funny and helpful and I appreciate those very kind words.  But I hope no one thinks it’s me.  Gifted doesn’t mean I’m greater than anyone else.  It means I was given a gift...from someone else.  I didn’t earn it or buy it.  It was given to me.  I can no more take credit for it than I can take credit for the beautiful brown eyes I was given.
“Natural” is another good word.  I’m “naturally” intelligent, creative, funny or helpful.  Natural, as in nature, as in a force of nature.  Something outside of myself.  Again, it’s nothing I can take credit for; it was given to me.

Yet, I also hope that no one thinks any of this comes easily.  I will admit that there are times when she seems to just show up and say, “Write this,” or “Say that.”  And I do, and it comes out easily and effortlessly with almost no preparation whatsoever.  It’s brilliant!  By the way, that’s happened maybe two or three times in my whole life.
Here’s how she usually speaks to me:
I love you and so I have chosen you to do something for me.
I’m going to tell you what to do, but you must sit down and do it.
You must keep working at it until I tell you to stop!
I may not give it to you all at once.
I may give it to you in pieces and you may have to do some extra work, most likely a lot of extra work.
I may have you do research and preparation.
I may give you a vision that is not completely revealed or a small piece of a vision and you will have to figure out the rest.
If, at any point, you stop, I will wait for you to complete the unfinished step, before I give you the next step.  But I will also give you very little rest until you do complete your next step.
I may not even tell you why I want you to do this.
You may or may not get credit for this, but we both know all the credit belongs to me anyway, so don’t believe for one moment that you’re any better than anyone else.
I will most certainly not tell you the results nor will I guarantee that there will even be any results!”

So, sadly, I can take very little genuine credit for my work.  It comes to me and I put it out there. Except that I usually have to work my tail off to do what the Muse expects of me.  And while it’s a lot of fun fooling people into thinking I’m brilliant, the truth is I’m just the stenographer or the ventriloquist’s dummy, or maybe even a thief.
Or maybe, just maybe, I’m the vehicle of something greater than me.  In Star Wars it is called the Force.  Many people, borrowing New Age language, say that the Universe guides the creative process.  Christians call it the Holy Spirit or being led by the Spirit.
Wallace Wattles says in The Science of Getting Rich, that when we are expressing our purpose, it is actually God who is expressing His purpose through each of us.  So, in other words, God has not chosen to come to this planet and dance, but He does chose to dance through Mikhail Baryshnikov or Fred Astaire.  Or He tells jokes through Chris Rock.  Or He motivates through Zig Ziglar.  Or He paints through Pablo Picasso.  Or He writes through Anne LaMott.  Or He_______through________ .  And He ________ through you and through me.  Fill in the blank for yourself.  No one can do it for you.
Odds are you know what you’re supposed to be doing.  The greater odds are you aren’t doing it yet.  Most people aren’t.
If you want to be gifted, if you want to be unique and special, if you want to rise above the sit-on-the-couch-and-watch-TV crowd (which is most of the world), then here’s what you do:  you follow your purpose.  It may be one step or it may be the whole picture.  But follow it.  Not even the Muse, the Force, the Universe, or the Holy Spirit can take credit for that.  But you’ll end up being grateful and just a little more in love just the same.

Me he enamorado de otra persona.

O He_______through________.

The Enemy, Part II

The gifts I am given on my birthday are for me. The gifts I am given at birth are for the world.
Robert Farrell

In my previous blog I talked about the Enemy.  I said that, while I agree with Steven Pressfield, that the Enemy is an impersonal and elemental force like a hurricane, I believe it is also very personal.  It is out to get you…specifically you…and specifically me.  It hates you…specifically you…and specifically me.  Do you understand this?  We have been told to keep our friends close and our enemies closer.  This Enemy is one I want to keep very near, but also at a safe distance.
This morning I visited a friend.  He had a little bulldog that wouldn’t stop barking at me and my friend finally had to pick up the dog and let it get close to me to see that I was safe.  The dog slobbered on me.  So the dog had to be put in another room.  But we knew where it was.
Until that dog was properly restrained, it would not stop barking at me.
That’s what the Enemy does.  It barks. But it also slobbers and it can definitely bite, hard!
I mentioned the five ways the Enemy deters us:
Distraction.
            Dissuasion.
            Discouragement.
            Defeat.
            Death.

I discussed the first two yesterday.  Let’s finish.

Discouragement is dissuasion’s twin brother (or sister).  They look very similar and honestly, even I have trouble telling them apart, but here’s the difference.
Dissuasion says there’s a better way to do what I’m doing and I should have known that or thought of it.  Discouragement adds to that by saying, because I hadn’t chosen that “better” way, I shouldn’t bother at all.  Discouragement says, “Why didn’t you think of that?  I’ll tell you why!!  Because you’re no good at this!!!  Anyone else would have figured that out!  But not you!  Everyone, I mean, everyone else is better, smarter, more attractive, more competent, more confident than you!  Stop, now, while you’re behind!”
Here’s another monologue I often hear, especially in areas where I normally feel competent.
“You’re not fooling anyone!  Pretty soon everyone is going to see what a phony you are! You act like the expert, but there is so much that you don’t know!”
The goal of these arguments is, of course, to get you to stop, not just for a little while, but permanently.
There are a couple of strategies and they both lead to the same conclusion.  One strategy is to ignore these arguments and get back to work.  The other is to acknowledge that their may be a grain of truth.  Yes, at some level, others are “better” at this than me (and I am also “better” than others).  Yes, at some level, I might be faking it.  Yes, I have a lot to learn.
Thank you, Enemy, for reminding me of this.  Instead of quitting, maybe I can use the truth in that to get stronger, better, smarter, faster, truer.
Ignore the Enemy or acknowledge the Enemy, the only answer is to get back to work.
That’s it.  There’s no other answer.  I’m either working in my purpose.  Or I’m not.
Finally, the last strategy of the Enemy is death.  Are their spiritual forces out there that can kill us?  Yes.  But I’m simple enough to believe that there is a greater force in the universe that protects us until our mission is finished.  And maybe I’m wrong, because I’m thinking of a dear friend who lost her 5-year-old brother due to faulty diagnoses.  It was decades ago, but it still hurts.  Had this boy fulfilled his purpose?  My best friend died at 18 because he was doing what a lot of 18-year-old do, driving too fast.  Had he fulfilled his purpose?  I think of kids who were killed in drunk driving accidents through no fault of their own.  Had they fulfilled their purpose? What about the Holocaust, the Cultural Revolution, the Killing Fields, Bosnia, political or environmental famines, children with cancer, civilian victims or war or any of the other darknesses that pervade our world?  Have all those victims fulfilled their purpose?  I have no way of answering that.  I don’t understand any of it.  I don’t have any answers.
I think the only thing I can do is focus on what I am supposed to be doing here.  My purpose does not absolve me from doing what I can to address tragedy.  In fact, it may lead me to be becoming more directly involved in the plight of others. Though my purpose is very solitary, its expression is meant to go out to the world.  I have seen many missed opportunities to help others because I had not dedicated time beforehand to my purpose.
So can Death stop me?  Maybe.  But maybe if I live in my purpose now, my purpose can live beyond me.  One thing I am sure of  - my death is in the future.  Maybe ten years from now or ten minutes.  It doesn’t matter.  All that matters is what I do with this moment.  That’s all I get anyway.
I’m either in my purpose or I’m not.  I think that’s all there is.

Derrota.
Muerte.

Discutí los dos primeros ayer. Vamos a terminar.

"No estás engañando a nadie!
Yo no tengo ninguna respuesta.
Entonces, ¿La muerte me detenga? No importa.

The Enemy, Part 1

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.”
Genesis 3:1a

“But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”
Genesis 4:7b

“Now this is the age of alibis.”
Dorthea Brande – Wake Up and Live

I shouldn’t be amazed at the number of ways I can find to avoid doing my work.  I think life boils down to a couple of basic propositions:  I’m here for a reason and the Enemy, Satan, Resistance, whatever you want to call it, is here to stop me.  It’s really that simple and that complex.  So, I’m either working towards my purpose or I’m not.   Now here’s the interesting thing.  There can be times when I can allow the Enemy to deter me from my purpose.  I can lose interest or motivation.  I can become afraid.  I can make excuses.  I can allow fear to enter.  In other words, there is a seemingly infinite number of ways I can be off my purpose.  The Enemy, however, is never diverted from its purpose.  Never.
In The War of Art, Steven Pressfield says Resistance is not personal.  It’s more like a hurricane that takes out everyone and everything in its path.  But it is personal.  There is a spiritual element to this.
Without apology, I believe there are spiritual forces in the world.  Some are good and some are evil.  I believe in the Biblical God and I believe in Satan and all his demonic forces.  I write this reluctantly, not because I’m ashamed of my beliefs but because I understand the associations that are instantly made with American Evangelical Christianity.  This is not the time or place to defend or refute those associations.
Let me ask this of the reader instead.  Go with the idea that there are spiritual forces in the world and some of those forces want you to contribute, to be happy, to live out your life’s purpose in that way help others to live out their purpose.
Then there’s the Enemy.  And the enemy has one goal: to stop you from living out your purpose.  And, yes, it’s like an impersonal, elemental force.  But it’s also personal.  It’s extremely personal.  There are forces, spiritual forces that hate me…and you specifically.  There are forces that are out to get me…and you specifically.
I have found five ways that the Enemy works on me.  They may or may not go in this order.
            Distraction.
            Dissuasion.
            Discouragement.
            Defeat.
            Death.

            Let’s look at each one.
Distraction is the most obvious and common method.  Life seems to be nothing but distractions.  Some of those distractions are pleasant, like a pretty girl, or a favorite movie that’s on TV, or suddenly I notice what a beautiful day it is and wouldn’t it be nice to be outside and appreciate the day instead of being in my purpose?
Some of my distractions seem obligatory.  Family, job, chores.  “Emergencies” that really aren’t.  It’s funny how all of these things get in my face the moment I begin my work.  I haven’t picked up my bass guitar in a long time, but when I was trying to learn it, I would sit in the family room and begin practicing.  Inevitably, my daughter, who was about two at the time would come into the room and clamor for my attention.  If I didn’t give it to her, she would start crying.  Within a matter of minutes I would give up in frustration.  Finally, one day, I decided to ignore her.  She cried and I kept practicing.  She cried some more and I kept practicing.  She cried more loudly and I kept practicing.  Then an amazing thing happened.  She stopped crying and she walked away.  The next morning she left me alone while I practiced.  Unfortunately, I chose not to make the bass a priority and so for now I have lost that opportunity, but the lesson applies.

Dissuasion is another tactic.  It sounds like this:
“There are more important things to be doing.”
“What you’re doing has been done before, and done better.”
“There’s too much competition out there.”
“You’re not going to make any money doing this.”
And, the Enemy’s personal favorite for me:
“You’re doing it wrong.”
When I was beginning my teaching career, I had found something that was working for me and I was applying it in the classroom.  In my enthusiasm I shared my discovery with a colleague.  His reply was something like, “Yeah, but don’t forget you also need to do….”  I don’t even remember the specifics.  As with most interactions, I only remember how it made me feel.  It made me feel defeated, that I still wasn’t doing it right.  Whatever it was I was excited about, I stopped doing.  Now maybe the colleague was trying to help me or maybe he was trying to prove his superiority.  It doesn’t matter.  What mattered was how I perceived this as a message about my abilities.  What mattered more was how I allowed it to dissuade me from moving forward.
The truth is, no matter what we’re doing, we can probably always improve upon it.  But I’ve learned through painful experience that it’s better to keep moving forward rather than stop.  It’s best to let the improvements occur naturally and internally.  Maybe someone else is doing what you’re doing and doing it better.  It doesn’t matter.  Because no one is doing it like you.  No one was else was created to fulfill your purpose.  No one else is here to fulfill your purpose.  Only you are.
I will finish this in the next blog.  Thank you for reading.

Génesis 3:1 a

Dorthea Brande - Wake Up and Live

No importa.
No importa.

Did You Think I Was Going to Stop?

Did you think I was going to stop?  Did you think I was going to take a day off?  A holiday?  Why?  It’s just another day.  I don’t mean that cynically.  “Just another day” means it’s one more chance to do my best, to contribute my gifts to the world.
The truth is that I have more days behind me than I have ahead of me.  My life has a specific number of days allotted to it.  At some point I reached the halfway mark.  I’m probably past that point now.  So the days I have ahead of me, I need to use wisely.
I’ll be honest.  I have wasted a lot of time.  That time is gone.  I can’t get any of it back.  I wasted it not only in useless activity but worse, in useless, negative thinking.  I fed myself lies that I wasn’t capable, couldn’t do, be or have what I wanted.  Yes, maybe I heard those lies from others, but the truth is I was the one who opened my soul and allowed those lies to enter.
What dispels those lies?  Only one thing:  being in my purpose.  If I’m doing the things I’m supposed to be doing then I recognize the lies as lies.  If I’m not, then the lies become true.  It’s not that I’m ever incapable of reaching my full potential.  It’s that I have chosen to be incapable.
One day I saw a man on crutches and it was obvious by the way he was walking that he didn’t need them.  I think he was homeless and perhaps his crutches were a prop to gain sympathy.  I don’t know.  But he obviously didn’t need them.  Most of us don’t need our crutches but we walk around on them anyway.
I remember doing the same thing once.  I was browsing in a comic book store when I knew damn good and well, I should have been preparing for a night class I was teaching.  The homeless guy had his crutch and I had mine.  I noticed him, because at that moment in the comic book store I was him.
Why wasn’t I preparing for my class?  Well, it was a long time ago, but it was a class I wasn’t enjoying.  I wasn’t teaching it well.  There were a lot of bad things happening in my life at the time and that class was one of them.  I didn’t want to put forth the effort because I had already fallen on my face.  I couldn’t get it together.  I felt like both my legs were broken, just like my spirit, and so I had to have my crutches.  Of course, neither my legs nor my spirit were broken.  I just acted as if they were.  I didn’t really need the crutches.
So of course, I did what any person with two unnecessary crutches would do:  I avoided walking correctly and I blamed others for my predicament.  That was my other crutch, by the way, blaming others for my predicaments.  I still do that, too.  I blame God, my family (the family I was raised in and the family I’m raising), my teachers, my neighbors, employers, the economy, the politicians, etc. etc. etc.  Like the crutch of avoidance, there is no end to the number of ways I can use the crutch of blame.  There is never a lack of people or circumstances to blame.  All I have to do is point that crutch outward.  A crutch never works if I move it inward.
Dorthea Brand says it best in Wake Up and Live:
Rather than revive the memory of our early failures, let alone run the risk of hurting ourselves anew, we will unconsciously decide to remain inactive, or we will choose to do something easier than we should attempt, or we will start on a program and carry it near the spot where we were hurt before, and there find any excuse to beat a hasty retreat, leaving the work undone, the reward ungathered. The childish Unconscious wins: at least we were not bruised again in an already tender spot.

And:

The fears, anxieties and apprehensions, you see, were far more than mere negative things. By acting as if they were important, you endowed them with importance, you turned them into realities. They became parasitic growths, existing at the expense of everything that is healthy in you.

So what happened that night?  Honestly, I don’t remember what happened that night, though I don’t think it went very well, but here’s what happened with the class.  At some point, maybe later that same night, I was walking around the school hallways, after just having complained about the class and my boss (for giving me that class), when suddenly I stopped dead in my tracks.  I realized that this scenario was very familiar.  In fact, it was a repetition of the job I had had less than a year previous.  A job from which I had been fired.  Why had I been fired?  The specifics aren’t important.  Suffice it to say, I found myself in over my head and rather than try to manage things, I spent most of my time avoiding and complaining.  I hated that job.  But this job?  Despite the difficult class, I loved this job.  I had worked hard and long to get it.  And I was about to lose it, because I was repeating the same behaviors I had used in the previous job.  I was using the same crutches.
I realized then that this was a turning point in this job.  I realize even more now that this was a turning point in my life.  The next day, I went to the library.  I checked out every book I could find on the subject.  Because I was not an expert in the subject, I called in people who were experts in the field as guest speakers.  I created a project for the students that put them more in charge of their own learning.  To quote Dorthea Brand again, "The law of nature is: Do the thing and you shall have the power; but they who do not do the thing have not the power."  Suddenly I had power.
Did all of this turn things around completely?  No and yes.  No, it did not completely salvage the class.  I had lost credibility and I never completely recovered it with that particular group.   But at least subsequent classes were far more interesting for me, if for no other reason, I was putting far more into it.
And, yes, it did turn things around completely.  As a result of finishing the class (I had been offered the chance to let another instructor take it over) I was offered more classes.  Interestingly, the next class I was offered was one I also had no expertise in, but I tackled things early and it became one of my best experiences.  And I would love to tell you how I wound up becoming Teacher of the Year a couple of months later…so I will, because I did.
So, no, I’m not taking today off.  I’m not going to use the crutch of avoidance by claiming I deserve the time off because of an arbitrary number on a calendar.  I’ve had enough time off and I don’t know how much time I have left.  I need to throw away my crutches and keep walking forward.

He perdido mucho tiempo.
No pude conseguir juntos.

He tenido suficiente tiempo libre y no sé cuánto tiempo me queda. Tengo que tirar mis muletas y seguir caminando hacia adelante.
